an odd type of problem while installing windows xp

this is a very strange kind of problem i m facing while installing windows xp. actually my pc is a very old one,7-8 years old. don't know the model of the motherboard. it has 256 RAM, and is an intel pentium 3, 550 Mhz. whenever i try to install windows xp on it, it restarts again and again at the stage of installing windows. all goes fine in the dynamic update, and preparing for installation stage. but while the windows installation it simply keeps on restarting. any other os does give this problem. i tried windows 98, me they worked fine but i need xp on it. is there some problem with the motherboard compatibility, help me palz, and do it fast.
