Jaanaa.N Jaana.N - Ahmed Faraz
One of the leading poets of current times, Ahmed Faraz holds a unique position as one of the best poets of the present era, with a simple style of writing with which the common man can identify with. Ethnically a pathan, Ahmed Faraz studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University. Outspoken about politics, he went into self-imposed exile during the Zia era after he was arrested after reciting certain poems at a mushaira. About his current writings, he says: "I now write only when I am forced to from the inside.".
Personally I am not a bif fan of him but some of his poetry is just amazing. One of his masterpeice is Jaana.N Jaana.N and here are some of selected ashaar from that ghazal.
Abb ke tajdeed-e-vafaa ka nahi imkaa.N jaanaa.N
yaad kiya tujh ko dilai.N tera paimaa.N jaanaa.N
(tajdeed-e-vafa = renewal of love, imkaa.N= possibilty, paimaa.N = promise)
yoo.Nhee mausam ki ada dekh ke yaad aaya
kisqadar jald badal jatey hai.N insaa.N jaanaa.N
dil yeh kehta hai shayad ho fasarda tu bhi
dil ki kia baat karai.N dil to hai nadaa.N jaanaa.N
(fasarda = sad, nadaa.N= naivé)
awwal awwal ki mohabbat ke nashey yaad to kar
bin piye he tera chehra tha gulastaa.N jaanaa.N
aakhir aakhir to yeh alam hai ke aab yaad nahi
rug-e-meena sulag uThee ke rug-e-jaa.N jaanaa.N
(rug= vein, meena=wine)
abb tera zikr bhi shayad he ghazal main aaey
aur se aur hoey dard ke unvaa.N jaanaa.N
hum ke rooThee hoi rut ko bhi mana laitey thai
hum nay dekha he na mausam-e-hijraa.N jaanaa.N
(rut= season, mausam-e-hijraa.N = season of seperation)
