SALAAH (Long Read)
FARAA'IDH (COMPULSORY ACTS) OF SALAAT There are thirteen compulsory acts for Salaat. Seven of them are to be observed before entering Salaat which are also called Sharaa'it-e-Salaat (Conditions of Salaat): - The body must be clean and pure.
- The clothes must be clean and pure.
- The place where the Salaat is performed must be clean and pure.
- The satr (hiding of nakedness, which in men consists of the parts of the body from the navel of the calf and in women the whole body excepting face, hands and feet) must be covered.
- Performing Salaat within its prescribed time.
- To face towards Qiblah.
- To make intention.
The remaining six are those which are in Salaat: - To say the Takbeer-e-Tahreemah.
- Qiyaam (Standing upright in Salaat).
- Qiraa'at (to recite at least three Aayah of the Holy Qur'aan along with Faatihah).
- Rukoo (to bow the head and the body in prayer).
- Both the Sajdah (to bow in prayer so as to touch the ground with forehead).
- The last qa'dah (to sit on knees in the Salaat).
WAAJIBAAT (NECESSARY ACTS) OF SALAAT There are fourteen Waajibaat (Necessary Acts) in Salaat:- To fix the first two rak'at of the fardh Salaat for Qiraa?at.
- To recite Soorah Faatihah in each and every rak'at (However, in the third and fourth rak'at it is Sunnah, not waajib).
- To recite a Soorah or one long verse or three short verses after Soorah Faatihah in the first two rak'at of fardh Salaat and in all the rak'at of waajib, Sunnah or Nafl Salaat.
- To recite Soorah Faatihah before any other Soorah or verse.
- To maintain proper sequenceand order in Qiraa?at, Rukoo, Sajdah and all the rak'ats.
- Qaumah (To stand upright after rising from Rukoo).
- Jalsah (To sit up straight between both Sajdahs).
- Ta'dil-e-Arkaan (To perform Rukoo, Sajdah etc. properly with calmness).
- First qa'dah (To sit for the duration required for reading Tashahhud after two rak'ats in every Salaat consisting of three or four rak'ats).
- To recite Tashahhud in both qa'dah.
- For the Imaam, to recite Qiraa?at in an audible manner in Fajr, Maghrib, Ishaa, Jumu'ah, both 'Eids, Taraweeh and Witr Salaat of Ramadhaan and to recite silently in Zuhr and 'Asr.
- To terminate the Salaat with the words of Salaam.
- To say takbeer for Qunoot and to read du'aa for Qunoot in Witr Salaat.
- To say the additional takbeers in both 'Eid Salaats.
- To stand upright at the time of takbeer-e-Tahreemah, i.e. the head should not be bent.
- To leave a gap of four fingers between the feetand to have the toes facing the Qiblah.
- The takbeer-e-Tahreemah of the Muqtadee should be said immediately after the Imaam's takbeer-e-Tahreemah.
- To raise the hands up to the ears while saying thetakbeer-e-Tahreemah. (This Sunnat is confined to men only.)
- To have the palms facing the Qiblah.
- To keep the fingers in their normal position i.e. neither too open nor closed tightly together.
- To place the palm of the right hand over the back of the left hand.
- To grip the wrist by forming a ring with the thumb and little finger. (Males only)
- To place the middle 3 fingers over the forearm. (Males only)
- To place the hands below the navel.
- To readthanaa.
SEVEN SUNNATS OF QIRAA'AT - To readTa'awwuz, i.e. A'oozu billaahi minash shaytaanir rajeem.
- To recite Tasmiyah, i.e. Bismillaahir rahmaanir raheem.
- To say Aameen softly.
- To recite fromTiwaal-e-Mufassal in Fajr and Zuhr i.e. from Soorah Hujuraat to Soorah Burooj, and from Awsaat-e-Mufassal in Asr and 'Ishaa i.e. from Soorah Burooj to Soorah Lam Yakun, and in Maghrib from Qisaar-e-Mufassal i.e. from Soorah Lam Yakun to Soorah Naas.
- To lengthen the first rak'at of Fajr Salaat.
- To recite not too fast nor too slow, but to recite at a medium pace.
- To recite Soorah Faatihah in the third and fourth rak'at of fardh Salaat.
- To say the takbeer of Rukoo.
- To grasp the knees with both hands. (Male only)
- To keep the fingers spread while grasping the knees.
- To keep the calves of the legs (i.e. the section from the ankles to knees) straight.
- To keep the back level.
- To keep the head and the lower back in a straight line.
- To recite Sub'haana rabbiyal 'azeem at least three times in Rukoo.
- While getting up from Rukoo, the Imaam should say sami'allahu liman hamidah, the Muqtadee should (thereafter) say Rabbanaa lakal Hamd and the Munfarid (person who is performing his Salaat individually) should say both.
- To say the takbeer of Sajdah.
- To place both knees first (upon the floor whilst proceeding for Sajdah).
- Thereafter to place both palms.
- Then to place the nose.
- Thereafter to place the forehead.
- To make Sajdah between the two hands (i.e. place the head between the palms).
- In Sajdah, to keep the stomach separate from the thighs. (Males only)
- To keep the arms separate from the sides. (Males only)
- To keep the elbows away from the ground.
- In Sajdah, to recite at least 3 times Sub?haana rabbi-yal a'laa.
- To say the takbeer of getting up from Sajdah.
- When getting up from Sajdah, to first lift the forehead, then the nose, then the hands and then the knees and to sit properly with calmness between the two Sajdahs.
THIRTEEN SUNNATS OF QA'DAH - To keep the right foot upright and to spread the left foot and sit on it, and to put toes facing the Qiblah.
- To place both hands on the thighs.
- In Tashah'hud, to lift the forefinger of the right hand while reciting Ash?hadu 'allaa ilaaha and to lower it upon illallaahu.
- To recite Durood Shareef in the last Qa'dah.
- After the recitation of Durood Shareef, to recite a Masnoon du'aa in the words of Qur'aan and Hadeeth.
- To make salaam on both sides.
- To begin the salaam with the right side.
- For the Imaam, to make intention of the Muqtadee, angels and pious jinn (whilst making salaam).
- For the Muqtadee, to make intention of the Imaam, angels and pious jinn and of the Muqtadees on the right and left side.
- For the Munfarid, to make intention of the angels only.
- For the Muqtadee, to make salaam along with the Imaam.
- To make the second salaam in a softer tone than the first salaam.
- For the masbooq (a person who had joined the congregation late), to wait for the Imaam to finish.
Note: In Rukoo the fingers should be spread apart, and in Sajdah they should be close together. (Noorul Eedhaah)
PARTICULAR DIFFERENCES IN THE SALAAT OF WOMEN - At the time oftakbeer-e-Tahreemah, a woman should raise both hands to the shoulders, but should not take them out from her dupattaa (head-covering).
- A woman should fold her hands on her chest and should put the palm of her right hand on the back of the palm of her left hand. She should attach both her arms very close to the sides and should keep the ankles of her feet joined together.
- In Sajdah, women should not keep their feet up but should take them out on their right hand side. They should perform their Sajdah with their bodies pressed and lowered as much as possible in such a way that the stomach touches the thighs and the arms and the sides are together. She should place both the elbows on the ground.
- When in qa'dah, a woman (should sit on the left side and) take out both of her feet on the right side. She should place both hands on the thighs and she should keep the fingers properly closed together.
- To keep the eyes towards the place of Sajdah during Qiyaam, at the toes during Rukoo, towards the nose during Sajdah and on shoulders while turning for salaam.
- To try ones utmost to prevent yawning. If it is not possible, then to cover the mouth with the back of the palm of the right hand.
- To try ones utmost to control coughing.
- To recite during silent Salaat with a voice that is audible to him.
- To sayAllaahu Akbaronce after salaam. Thereafter to say Astaghfirullaah thrice, slightly stretching the third time.
BEG THE FOLLOWING DU'AA AFTER EVERY FARDH SALAAT Allaahumma antas salaam wa minkas salaam tabaarakta yaa zal jalaali wal ikraam O Allah!OnlyYou are the Giver of Peace and only from Your Side is peace obtained. Very blessed are You, O Owner of Greatness and Majesty, Bestower of Honour and Beneficence.
(Fat'h-ul-Qadeer vol. 1 p. 439) Mullaa Ali Qaari rahmatullahi alayh has stated in Mirqaat (vol. 2 p.258) that,
ilayka yarji?us salaamu fahayyinaa Rabbanaa bissalaami wa adkhilnaa daaras salaam
has no basis in the Traditions; instead it is an addition from some story tellers.
and recite:
Allaahumma Laa Maani'a limaa a'tayta wa Laa mu'tiya limaa mana'ta wa Laa yanfa'u dhal jaddi minkal jadd O Allah! None can prevent that which You give and none can give that which You prevent and no wealthy person's wealth can save him from Your Punishment.
THE SUNNAH OF COMING OUT OF THE MOSQUE - To take out the left foot from the mosque.
- To recite Bismillah.
- To read Durood e.g.:
Assalaatu wassalaamu 'alaa rasoolillaahi sallallahu alayhi wasallam
May the salaat and salaam be upon the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam
- To recite the du'aa:
Allaahumma innee as?aluka min fadhlik (Muslim)
O Allah!I beg You for Your Grace.
- To wear the right shoe first then the left.
THE PRAYERS WITH CONGREGATION - Always try to say your prayers with congregation. (Muslim)
- There is 27 times more benefit to say prayers with congregation.
- The first pronounced Name of Allah (takbeer-e-oolaa) for the prayers is better than the world and whatever is in it. (Mishkaat)
- When the people begin to stand then, before takbeer, first straighten the rows. Thereafter takbeer should be said.
- It has been reported in Tirmizi that 'Umar radhiyallahu anhu had appointed a person for straightening the lines. When that person would inform that all the lines are straight, then 'Umar radhiyallahu anhu would say takbeer.
- Keep the lines perfectly straight and stand joined together. Do not leave space between each the other. The shoulders be joined together and the ankles perfectly opposite to each other. (Sihaah sittah) It is not necessary to join the ankles.
- Offer every prayer in such a manner as if it were the last prayer of your life.
- Do not run if the prayer has been started lest you should gasp. But walk steadily and with grace. (Tirmizi)
