Title: Breaking the silence
Name: Joao Quaresma
Country: Portugal

I took this shot on Pico Island in the Azores Archipelago while serving as a captain on a whale-watching mission. It was a beautiful, windless day with some swelling. A pod of common dolphins were nearby and gave us the pleasure of watching them playing with the boat.

I participated as a photographer in the first expedition into the newly created Juruena National Park, at the very heart of the Amazon forest, in Brazil. The expedition was organized by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for nature. It was 20 days far from everything, through the Juruena River, one of Amazonia's most isolated areas. Work conditions were exhausting. Besides the high temperatures and extreme humidity, the expedition members were constantly flogged by insects.
The Juruena River has plenty of waterfalls. During the hottest hours of the day, hundreds of butterflies sit on the river rocks to feed from mineral salts accumulated there. Over more than 20 years as an environmental photographer, I had never seen such an enormous concentration of butterflies as that. The scene was begging to be shot. I spent approximately one hour shooting various angles and changing lenses under the burning sun. The noise from the St. August Fall was too loud, and I had to protect the camera lens from water sprays.
In order to add a little movement to the butterflies on the fly, I used an exposure speed of 1/80 of a second, with the camera in manual mode to maintain control of the exposure.

Title: This Side Up

This image is about optical illusions, designed alternatives and manipulated room perceptions. It is based on the way people interpret two-dimensional images into three-dimensional images. The image was taken in an indoor pool in Vienna, Austria. It is a combination of an upside-down photo of a pool with a right-side up photo of a swimmer to achieve deceptive illusion.

On June 10, 2006, at 20:25, I took this picture in the Cangkringan Village, Jogjakarta in Central Java, Indonesia. It was under the full moonlight during the eruption of Mount Merapi. It displays Mother Nature's true anger by way of a dramatic eruption and her beauty by way of the full moon. This contrast resonated in my heart.

This photo was taken in Guizhou, which is a region inhabited by ethnic minorities including the Han, Miao, Tung, Shui, Buti, Tao and Ti peoples. Each has its own cultures, customs and traditions yet cohabit in harmony. Guizhou is rich in natural resources, but it is still the poorest province in China, due to its unpredictable weather, rugged terrain and communication difficulties. People's livelihood and economy still need to be improved.

Jupiter Beach, Florida is one of the few public beaches in the United States where dogs are allowed. It is also among my favorite locations for capturing aerial photography while flying a powered, ultra light parachute. I spotted these dogs, a pair of Rhodesian Ridgebacks and a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd, the moment they arrived at the beach and were released by their owner - whereupon I swooped down, similar to a bird of prey, to capture their exuberance.

This was taken in Ecuador, during my reportage on micro crediting. Near the Chimborazo mountain, I met some Campesino people who breed "quy," a species of large rodent. While I was visiting the breeding area, I noticed two faces peering in from the other side of the broken glass. The backlight was really strong, the glass opaque and dirty. I metered the average area of the frame and I took this picture.

In Trenton, New Jersey on the porch of a house I was painting and I looked up to make a suggestion to my roommate who was helping me paint the banisters.
