How long have you been planning this?
Sujith Nair: Over the last 10 days. We made three futile attempts to kidnap Adnan, but were successful only on Saturday.

Why did you kill Adnan?
SN: We were heading towards Alibag, where we would check into a hotel. The plan was to negotiate with Adnan?s father from there. We anticipated Patrawala would take a few days before he gave in. But at Panvel, I switched on my mobile phone and I received a message that the police had launched a manhunt for us. From then on, it was a unanimous decision to kill Adnan.

Was there an alternate plan?
SN: Our plan was to lead Adnan into believing that I was also kidnapped with him. We were supposed to be blindfolded. It would be easy to convince Patrawala into paying the money for our safety. Adnan would never have known who the actual kidnappers were. But everything went haywire after the SMS

We wanted a lavish life

Didn?t you realise you would be caught?
SN: No. We decided to dump the body at an isolated spot. In fact, we were confident the body would never be found. All of us were preparing an alibi to prove our innocence.

Why did you demand Rs 2 crore as ransom?
SN: Initially, we decided to ask for Rs 1 crore. Then we decided to raise the amount to Rs 2 crore to leave scope for negotiation. All the members were assured Rs 20 lakh each. (There are five accused ? two juveniles ? Ayush and Khimesh and three adults. Raj and another accused are absconding.)

What would you have done with the money?
SN: I spent my childhood in Dubai. My parents were working there and my father was the editor of a channel there. I wanted to return to Dubai and spend the rest of my life there.

What were the others going to do with the money?
SN: They want to have a lavish life for the next few years. The Game Zone at Inorbit Mall, Malad, was the key attraction for most.
