Every man looks great in a pair of shades, but you can look even better. Sam Stilson tells you how.
If there is one fail-safe fashion accessory which is guaranteed to increase your cool factor, it’s a pair of sunglasses. Whether you’re dressed in a swanky suit or lounging shirtless on the beach, covering up your baby blues is a fashion forward step in the right direction.
But with the many styles of shades and their equally numerous price brackets, it can be hard to choose a pair. Plus, it’s important to know the boundaries of when and where it isn’t cool to wear sunglasses. No one wants to end up looking like Puff Daddy.
Whether you’re replacing on old pair or just tired of squinting in the sunlight, the following tips may help you find the perfect pair of sunglasses and tell you how to wear them right.
For Richer or for Poorer?
A big decision when buying a pair of shades is figuring out how much you’re willing to spend. Sunglasses are an odd commodity because you can get (to the untrained eye) an identical product for either 15 bucks or 500 bucks. Granted, your $15 pair may break in a month and sure they might not look quite as cool as the designer shades, but who really cares?
With the likelihood of damaging or losing your sunglasses while enjoying summer fun being very high, spending several hundred dollars on shades is not a wise investment. If you only spend a few dollars on glasses, when you do break them (and you will), you can just shrug your shoulders and grab another pair when you’re buying a case of beer. Then you won’t have to be that mopey sap crying over the terrible loss of his Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses.
So Many Styles
The second bone of contention when buying sunglasses is what style of frames do you want? The styles of sunglasses are constantly changing, and what is cool one year may be lame as hell the next, so you need to be on your toes.
Thanks to Johnny Knoxville, the aviator style glasses have been incredibly popular for the past few years; now, that popularity is beginning to wane. If you really want to look like an idiot in photographs 10 years from now, the Paris Hilton gigantic “The Fly” glasses are available in men’s styles too. You may be hip now, but you’ll regret the choice later.
It’s best to just go for a style that fits your face. If you have small eyes, pick a style with smaller lenses and vice versa. Don’t be afraid to get a little crazy though, considering you will lose or break the pair. White and purple shades? Why not?
UV Protection
Though you’re probably buying your sunglasses so you can look cool, it’s best not to forget they have a practical function, as well. Sunglasses are equipped with UV protection, so your eyes are protected from the sun and you won’t develop awful sight problems when you’re an old geezer. Though it’s damned near impossible to find a pair of sunglasses without some form of UV protection, it’s always smart to check and make sure.
Don’t Be A Corey Hart
Once you’ve got a great pair of sunglasses you may want to wear them all the time, but it’s important not to get carried away. The most obvious faux pas? Don’t wear your sunglasses at night. It’s just flat out stupid. It defeats the purpose of sunglasses and it will undoubtedly cause a breakout of Corey Hart choruses.
Only in the Summer
Another tip to remember about sunglasses is that they aren’t a year-round item. They should be reserved for the period from late spring to late autumn, unless of course, you’re worried about the glare from the snow when on a trek through the wilderness.
Never Inside
Though it can be easy to forget you’re wearing them if you’ve been outside all day, it’s important to remember to take your shades off when inside. Not only is it rude, but it flat out just looks strange. Though you can push them up to rest on your head, it’s better to just remove them all together out of respect for the people you’re talking to.
The Eyes Have It
One question you may want to ask yourself before committing to wearing shades all the time is whether you have beautiful eyes or not. If women often swoon over your peepers, you may want to cut down on the amount of time you wear your sunglasses. If you’re sitting on a patio with your eyes all covered up, the ladies will walk right by. However, if your dazzling green eyes are beckoning, the story might be different. You may want to save the shades for the fishing trips.
