How To Not Ruin a Pair of Jeans
Men's Fashion in The Soko
How is it possible to go wrong with a pair of jeans? Sam Stilson tells you how to avoid a faux pas when wearing denim.
A pair of jeans is every man’s ace up the sleeve. They are an incredibly comfortable pair of pants that look good with nearly any shirt. They can be purchased at inexpensive prices and their lifespan is far reaching. They transcend fashion cultures and even generation gaps. Such versatility is rare in the world of fashion, hence the popularity of the garment and its ubiquitousness around the world.
Even so, jeans are not fool proof; nothing ever is. It is still possible for the most inept and backwards thinking fashion disasters out there to ruin this incredibly simple outfit. Yes, through improper style selections and unwarranted alterations even the almighty jeans can produce gags and guffaws from onlookers.
In an effort to save these people from themselves and to salvage those poor pairs of denim, the following is a list of ways people can avoid ruining a pair of jeans.
Get Fit
Fashion trends come and go, but knowing your own body and its dimensions will help you for a lifetime. There are often two extremes when it comes to ruining jeans with the wrong fit: wearing them too tight or too baggy. Both look ridiculous. Something can be said for a snug pair of pants, but when you’re risking your ability to have children it becomes too much. The same goes for those who think wearing denim duvet covers as pants looks great. Not only do you look like you got your pants off a spool at the fabric store, but forget running, jumping or moving too. Either your pants are going to fall down or you’ll trip over yourself and your jeans, and look foolish.
Face the Flood
Some people manage to get the fit of their jeans down pat, but for some unknown reason go overboard on the length. To compensate they roll the ends of their pants up and strut on down the street. This seems to be incredibly popular in “indie” circles, but the whole thing begs the question… where’s the flood? Rolling up your pant legs looks nerdy as all hell (when will geek chic go away?) and its practical uses can be avoided by either buying pants that fit your leg length or manning up and stepping on the ends until they fray.
Fake Vintage
Rips, tears and fades can look cool when they’re legitimate. Faking legitimacy however, is the lamest and most deplorable thing imaginable in fashion. Thank God the days of sandblasted and “fake” paint smeared jeans appear to be on their way out, but for a couple years there, we as a culture were thoroughly embarrassing ourselves in the annals of fashion history. Just be real. If you want a rip in your jeans go jump over a fence or get in a fight. Live in your jeans and they’ll come to show character all on their own.
Black and Blue
Whatever company came up with coloured jeans probably thought they were tapping into a gold mine. Who wouldn’t want to wear red, green, purple or turquoise jeans? Um, how about anyone with any sense of style? Jeans are blue for the most part, but black will also do just fine. Anything else can be covered by cords and slacks and shorts. You don’t mess with success.
The Right Cut
Jeans come in many different cuts and styles. Some taper at the legs, others go straight down. Some are snug around the middle, some a little roomier. There are lots of options and every different brand has a different set of styles. It’s up to you to find the cut that you will look your best in. Nothing looks worse than Bristol board jeans that don’t fit the body shape of a person, but just cover up their legs like two long blue rectangles. Try some different styles on until you find the right cut.

don’t trash a classic
Jeans have survived for so long and are so well loved because they are simple. They really don’t need much to look good. That’s why it’s so shocking when people do manage to mess the whole thing up. The next time you are shopping for jeans take a look around you. You can gauge what is cool by the style of jeans most people are wearing. Just try to avoid silly fads. They will be gone in a year or two. If you get a pair of jeans that fit your body, are made well and are blue you should be alright.
