Gadgets and Technology

The good: The well-built Apple iPod Hi-Fi possesses excellent sound quality for a one-piece system, and it has lightning-quick controls, particularly when using the bundled remote control. It's also visually appealing and includes design features such as a built-in power brick, handles, and battery operation. A digital (S/PDIF) line-in and a complete set of dock adapters round out the positives.
The bad: The Apple iPod Hi-Fi sounds only marginally better than its competition but costs much more. Despite the remote's menu button, you can't navigate the iPod's menu. There is no video line-out, headphone jack, or dock-connector output. The Hi-Fi's weight and size take away from its portability. Poorly encoded audio sounds terrible, and the speakers sound much better with higher-quality files/sources.
The bottom line: The pricey Apple iPod Hi-Fi portable stereo speakers are well built and sound great, but they don't bring anything new to the table.

Apple MacBook Pro

The MacBook Pro delivers unparalleled style and a solid set of features and software, but a few transitional performance issues keep it from rivaling the most powerful PC laptops. Is it right for you?

Hello, my TV. An Intel demo guy speaks into his remote. The PC transforms speech into text and then follows his command. Consumers are not restricted much on vocabulary. Saying "Put on Family Guy" or "I want to watch Family Guy" will give you the same results. However, it may not respond if you say, "Tell Regis Philbin to quit doing that thing with his head."

The wheels on the plane go round and round. This wheel, from a Boeing airplane, is on display at IDF. Computers monitor the wheel's air pressure when it's actually on a plane.

Researchers concoct self-propelled nano motorResearchers concoct self-propelled nano motor

Researchers at UCLA and the University of Bologna have come up with a nano-size vehicle that can inch its way forward on sunlight and one day could, conceivably, be used to shuttle medicines or other small particles around. The motor in chemical terms is a rotaxane, a mechanically interlocked molecule consisting of a ring trapped on a rod by bulky stoppers at both ends in the same way that rings are kept on an abacus. The ring in a sense serves as the foot. It is attracted to one end of the rod, called Station A, and moves toward it until it hits the stopper. The ring then moves to the second port of call, Station B, and moves toward it until halted by the opposite stopper. By alternating between Stations A and B, the ring pulls the whole contraption forward.
The attraction and repulsion is accomplished through electron harvesting. One of the ends of the barbell harvests an electron from sunlight and transfers it to Station A. When Station A contains an electron, the ring moves toward Station B. When Station A returns the electron to the barbell, the ring moves toward it.
A full cycle is carried out in less than a thousandth of a second, which means that the motor can operate at a frequency of 1,000 Hertz, according to the researchers. This is equivalent, using the car engine analogy, to 60,000 revolutions per minute.
"The kind of nanotechnology that will emerge from these nano motors still requires a lot of fundamental work. The nano motors are extremely sophisticated in their design," Fraser Stoddart, UCLA's Fred Kavli chair of NanoSystems Sciences and director of the institute, said in a statement.
Last year, researchers at Rice University showed off nanocars. These were propelled by external electric fields and did not generate their own energy, which the UCLA motor does. However, the Rice vehicles had moving molecular wheels.

Lenovo to launch Super 3G laptops

Lenovo has become the latest company to begin integrating high-speed mobile data into its laptops.
On Tuesday, the company announced that it had signed a deal with Vodafone to allow Lenovo laptops to carry connectivity for its third-generation (3G) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) wireless technologies. In the future, they will also tap High-Speed Downlink Packet Access technology.
HSDPA, also known as Super 3G, is being introduced by network operators this year and is much faster than standard 3G services.
Lenovo said it will add this integrated networking to its ThinkPad T60 and X60 notebooks. They will be available in some European countries, including the U.K., France and Germany, in the second quarter of 2006.
While HSPDA support will not be available immediately, ThinkPad customers will be able to upgrade their notebooks to this faster technology in the future, Lenovo said in a statement.
Last week, Dell became the first major systems vendor to announce that it had signed a deal, again with Vodafone, to start selling laptops with built-in wireless broadband--including support for HSDPA--sometime in the second quarter.
Up until now, the take-up of data services on mobile phones has been slow, and analysts have argued that services like HSDPA have needed the backing of the major systems vendors before they will become popular. But systems vendors have been reluctant to commit to selling systems using the mobile standards because of the high cost of using mobile technology for data.

Microsoft readying Vista marketing blitz

SAN FRANCISCO--Aiming to re-create the excitement that accompanied the launch of Windows 95, Microsoft is gearing up for a massive campaign to launch Windows Vista. Chairman Bill Gates has tasked the Windows marketing team with repeating its achievements with the decade-ago launch, such as convincing scores of people to line up at retail stores to purchase the operating system. The marketing budget won't be finalized until the end of Microsoft's fiscal year in June, but "regardless of that, we're still being held to that goal," said Dave Block, a senior product manager for Vista.
