Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, has died in a Kington hospital after being found unconscious in his hotel room hours after his side's elimination from the World Cup. He was 58.
Although Woolmer played 19 Tests for England, it was as an international coach he really made his mark, first with South Africa and then, after a spell as the ICC's High Performance Manager, with Pakistan.
Born in India, Woolmer made his mark in a strong Kent side in the 1970s as an allrounder, a pugnacious middle-order batsman and medium-paced seamer. Although his England career was just getting started when he joined World Series Cricket, like so many who threw their lot in with Kerry Packer, when he returned he was not the player he had been.

Called up to an England side in crisis in 1975, in only his second Test he staged a great rearguard innings to save his side when they followed on against Australia, holding out for 499 minutes against Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson to score 149. Although he added two more hundreds, also against Australia, World Series Cricket checked his career in 1977, and he effectively ended it forever by joining the rebel South African tour of 1981-82.

His coaching career started at Warwickshire, and he immediately made an impact as the county won a string of trophies in the early 1990s. That led to him being appointed by South Africa in 1994.

As a coach, his pioneering use of computers to show, for example, where opposing batsmen scored their runs may have stemmed from an experience of his own, batting against Mike Brearley's Middlesex. "Knowing I liked the cover-drive, he had Mike Selvey bowling at me wide of off stump, with two slips and two gulleys. In 45 minutes, I scored 12. Then I chased another wide one from Selvey and was caught at second slip."

In the 1996 World Cup, Graeme Hick was a notable victim of Woolmer's computer-based analysis, which revealed that if Hick could be kept scoreless for a spell, he tended to flick an off-stump ball in the air to midwicket. The trap was sprung by Fanie de Villiers, and Brian McMillan took the catch. Woolmer was creative and adventurous. But his coaching was based on a simple premise: the more enjoyable he could make the game, the better his players would respond. No two fielding practices were alike when Woolmer was in charge.
After a spell as the ICC's high-performance manager, he was announced as Pakistan's new coach in June 2004, and signed a contract to remain in charge until the 2007 World Cup. However, Pakistan's form leading up to the tournament was poor, and when they lost their first two matches - the second to Ireland - it appeared unlikely that his tenure would be extended. He had been mentioned as a possible successor to Duncan Fletcher as England coach.
He made 1059 runs at 33.09 in Tests, with three hundreds, and also took four wickets at 74.75. In all first-class cricket, mainly with Kent but also in South African state cricket, he scored 15772 runs at 33.55 and took 420 wickets at 25.87

Re: Pakistan coach Woolmer dies

Thats a real tragedy not only for Pakistan but for world cricket. He will be remembered as pioneer in modern day coaching. And those people back in pakistan who were souting "Woolmer Murda baad" after the Ireland defeat should be ashamed of now as pressure took him away. My condolence for his family and friends.

Re: Pakistan coach Woolmer dies

This goes to show how much pressure players and coaches for teams of the sub-continent have. Probably people are just taking the game too seriously and any loss is being hyped a lot. I feel really sad that a person had to lose his life in such a stress. After all its just a game. He was such a wonderful coach having transformed the SA team into such a strong opposition and now having done so well with the Pak team as well. Its a great loss for the cricket world.

Woolmer's death 'suspicious' - police (may have been murdered)

different sources are saying that there are marks on his necks

Police are now treating Bob Woolmer's death as suspicious, Mark Shields, the deputy commissioner of police, told a news conference in Jamaica.

"We have already informed the Woolmer family of these developments," Shields said. "Having met with the pathologists, our medical personnel and investigators, there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious."

Pervez Mir, the Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman, told AFP: "The police suspect that Woolmer may have been murdered. They have started an investigation." Unconfirmed reports suggested there had been signs of strangulation.

Shields said the police had been in close contact with the Pakistan team management, the Cricket World Cup committee and the ICC, but he would not speculate on the cause of Woolmer's death. "It would be inappropriate for me to make any comment at this stage as we have still not got the final official report from the pathologists," he said.

Talat Ali, the Pakistan team manager, told Geo TV they had not been given full details by the police. "They have not made any reference to poisoning or anything yet, as some reports are suggesting," Ali said. "There is no information at all that this poison could be involved. Investigations will carry on so we cannot come to any conclusions right now."

Ali denied Pakistan were not allowed to travel. "There are no police restrictions on the team," he said. "As planned for now, we are flying back on Saturday."

Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his hotel room on Sunday and pronounced dead shortly after at a Jamaica hospital. Woolmer's family said after speaking to doctors they expected his death came from a stress-related heart attack. An autopsy completed on Tuesday was inconclusive, but investigators were waiting for the results of toxicology tests to see if they helped determine the cause.

Bob Woolmer was about to reveal Players betting involvements before being murdered!

Today, Australian Media has just reported that Bob Woolmer was about to reveal Players betting involvements before being murdered. Earlier on Jamica Asst. Police Comissioner has mentioned in a press conference that Woolmer was murdered and there are some scrates found on his neck and his body was found pale blue with vomitting and blood in the bathroom.

What do you think guys? Has someone in the team shut his mouth before he was about to disclose Pakis betting involvements?? I think all this dilema is the worst ever lowest level in Pak Cricket.

Al right i do accept the fact that Pakistan has faced a humiliating defeat in the world cup but as far as the perceptions from the australian media are involved i will tell u his that australian media is already pissed at pakistani team b/c Darrel Hair the umpire who got removed from the elite panel(umpiring) b/c of pakistan team was from australia, and since muslims are known for being terrorist's bomber's and murderers and what not, so the western media is gonna try every thing they can to blame Pakistan for every thing that happens in the world

Police hunt Woolmer's murderer --- Pakistan coach strangled in hotel room

Abstract from Sydney Morning Herald
March 22, 2007 - 6:55PM

Pakistan's World Cup coach Bob Woolmer may have been strangled to death, two Jamaican newspapers reported today quoting unnamed police sources.
The Jamaica Gleaner said a "high-ranking police officer" had confirmed that fresh evidence has surfaced which suggested that Woolmer was strangled in his room at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
According to the police officer, the 58-year-old Woolmer was found half naked in his room, partially wrapped in a towel, the newspaper said.
"A bone in the neck, near the glands, was broken, and this suggests that somebody might have put some pressure on it," the officer told the newspaper.
"We are now treating this as a homicide."
The Jamaica Observer also quoted unnamed sources close to the investigation as saying that bones in the lower part of Woolmer's face were broken, suggesting he had been strangled.
Woolmer died in hospital on Sunday after being found unconscious in his hotel room a day after Pakistan were knocked out of the World Cup following a shock defeat by minnows Ireland.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington, head of World Cup security here, however refused to confirm rumours of strangulation, the Gleaner said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields had said on Tuesday that an autopsy conducted on Woolmer's body by a government pathologist proved inconclusive as to the cause of death which was being treated as "suspicious."
Shields said the police were awaiting the results of the toxicology and histology analysis from Woolmer's tissue sample.
On Wednesday night, a press release from the Jamaica Constabulary Force director of communications, Karl Angell, said a second opinion was being sought on the autopsy.
"Following consultations today involving representatives from the Government of Jamaica and the police, a decision was taken to seek the opinion of a second pathologist," the release said.
Detectives also reviewed tapes from closed-circuit cameras at the hotel, which could give them clues as to who entered Woolmer's room during the period in question.
The Gleaner reported that members of the Pakistan team were interviewed on Wednesday by the police.
"It is now unclear whether the team will be allowed to leave on Saturday as initially scheduled," the paper said.
Pakistan, who were knocked out of the tournament after losing to the West Indies and Ireland, defeated Zimbabwe in their last group D match at the Sabina Park on Wednesday.
