Michael Hill, the captain of the Australian side, scored the first century of the Under-19 World Cup as his team cruised to a 149-run win in their tournament opener against Namibia. After being put in to bat, most of the Australian top order frittered away the opportunity to get some batting practice, but Hill blasted 124 from a mere 71 balls to lift Australia to an imposing 312. Namibia were never in the hunt, and folded for 163 in 31 overs.
Hill came to the crease in the second over the match, after Kumar Sarna was trapped in front for 1, and quickly set about dominating the Namibian bowlers. He hit an astonishing 11 sixes and added 126 for the third wicket with Steven Smith, whose contribution was 39, in 13.3 overs. Hill fell in the 24th over, with Australia having already rocketed to 195, but thereafter the team lost its way and added only 117 more. Michael Cranmer (40) and James Faulkner (36) got starts, but Namibia fought back with wickets towards the end as Australia's innings ended two overs short of their quota.
Namibia's run-chase never got started - they lost their first two wickets with only ten on the board, and from there it was only a matter of damage control. Dawid Botha, their captain, helped achieve that with a blistering 46-ball 56, while Louis van der Westhuizen creamed 48 from 35, but thereafter wickets fell in a heap - the last six went down for 34 - as Namibia's innings folded. Smith finished as Australia's most successful bowler, his legspinners fetching him 4 for 41 from seven overs.
England U-19s 110 for 0 (Taylor 52*) beat Ireland U-19s 109 (Dougherty 34, Finn 3-21, Harris 3-40) by ten wickets
Scorecard
England's new-ball bowlers were the stars as they helped crush Ireland by ten wickets with more than 34 overs to spare in their first game of the Under-19 World Cup at Bayuemas Oval. Steven Finn, James Harris and Chris Woakes, the three seamers, did the job after Ireland were put in to bat, sharing eight out of ten wickets to bundle them out for 109. England's opening batsmen then completed the formalities, knocking off the runs in less than 16 overs.
Ireland's woes began soon after they began batting: Finn struck in his second over, getting rid of Paul Stirling, one of the openers, for 2. Wickets then fell at regular intervals, with Christopher Dougherty, the other opener, the batsman to offer some resistance. He made 34, and was one of only three to get into double digits. Finn and Harris helped themselves to three wickets each, while Woakes and Tom Westley, an offspinner, took two each.
Billy Godleman and James Taylor, the England openers, then knocked off the runs in a hurry. Godleman scored at more than a run a ball for his unbeaten 38, but Taylor managed the bulk of the strike, scoring an unbeaten 52 from 63 balls as England sailed home with plenty to spare.
Pakistan U-19s 76 for 2 (Amin 31*, Shehzad 27*) beat Malaysia U-19s 75 (Arifin 28, Raza 6-29) by eight wickets
Scorecard

Adil Raza, the 16-year-old seamer, scythed through hosts Malaysia, taking 6 for 29, before Pakistan knocked off the runs with eight wickets to spare to begin their World Cup title defence in perfect fashion.
Pakistan needed only 9.3 overs to chase down their target of 76, with Umar Amin and Ahmed Shehzad adding 69 of those runs for the second wicket. Amin, who scored 31, hit seven fours in his breezy knock, while Shehzad saw Pakistan through to the finish
The Pakistan captain Imad Wasim's decision to field first reaped immediate reward as his seamers Raza and Mohammad Aamer claimed three wickets apiece to have Malaysia reeling at 35 for 6 after 10 overs. Nik Azril Arifin, who scored 28 off 43 balls, was the only Malaysian who showed enough application to stay at the crease, and it was only a matter of time before Raza returned to polish off the tail.
In the other match of the day, India defeated Papua New Guinea by 195 runs.

England U-19s 56 for 0 (Taylor 43*) beat Bermuda U-19s 55 (Douglas 21, Dawson 3-15) by 10 wickets
Scorecard

England outclassed Bermuda by ten wickets after knocking them over for 55 in the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur. Chasing 56 was never going to pose much of a problem, with James Taylor striking an unbeaten 43 which included eight fours.
Bermuda were in self-destruct mode from the moment they chose to bat, losing their first four wickets to the new-ball combination of Steven Finn and James Harris. The two snared two wickets apiece as Bermuda slumped to 29 for 4.
Christopher Douglas (21) was the only Bermuda batsman to reach double figures as they folded up in 28.5 overs. Eight of the batsmen couldn't even reach 5 and it was only thanks to the 11 extras that the total crossed 50. Liam Dawson, the left-arm spinner, took three wickets to emerge and was duly rewarded with the Man-of-the-Match award.
Australia U-19s 206 (Hughes 46, Pascoe 37, Khadka 4-32, Shrestha 3-32) beat Nepal U-19s 110 (Vishwakarma 33, Rose 3-21, Pattison 3-25) by 96 runs
Scorecard

Australia exposed Nepal's batting frailties by bowling them out for 110 on course to their 107-run win at the University Sains Malaysia ground. Nepal's bowlers had done a good job by restricting Australia to 206 but their batsmen crumbled during the run-chase.
Nepal's pursuit got off to an inauspicious start when Mahesh Chhetri was run out by Philip Hagues and they soon collapsed to 36 for 4 when right-arm seamer James Pattison prised out three wickets. Clive Rose, the left-arm spinner, then took the next three wickets to fall: he had Rom Shreshtha and Sagar Khadka caught by captain Micheal Hill, before trapping Antim Thapa lbw. Rahul Vishwakarma had some fun out in the middle, smashing a six and three fours to remain unbeaten on 33, before Steven Smith removed the tail-enders with his legspin.
Australia had made a solid start, with Hughes and Kirk Pascoe putting on 62 runs for the first wicket. But the tide turned in Nepal's favour once Pascoe was bowled by Shrestha. Hill showed aggressive intent, striking a six and a four, but he tried one shot too many against Shrestha.
Once Hughes, who was guiding Australia's innings, was stumped off the bowling of Vishwakarma, Nepal pulled things back. Australia's middle-order all got starts but they could not capitalise on them: Michael Cramner with 32 and James Faulker with 22, a case in point. Khadka then ripped through the tail to finish with four scalps.
Pakistan U-19s 156 (Salah-ud-din 53) beat New Zealand U-19s 129 by 27 runs

Plucky knocks from Usman Salahuddin and Ali Asad helped Pakistan recover from a perilous 28 for 4 before the bowlers completed the fightback against New Zealand by rounding off a 27-run win.
New Zealand's medium-pacers seemed to have justified their captain's decision to field, restricting Pakistan to 156 in 47.1 overs. Tim Southee and Trent Boult, the opening bowlers, shared four wickets between them before Anurag Verma picked up two towards the end.
However Pakistan's bowlers were upto the task, reducing New Zealand to 51 for 4 in the 23rd over. Harry Boam led the chase with a patient 38 and his partnership with Greg Morgan took them closer but legspinner Ahmed Shehzad grabbed three wickets to hasten the end.

Sangwan's five sets up six-wicket victory

India U-19 153 for 4 (Taruvar Kohli 54, Srivastava 47) beat South Africa U-19 149 (Vandiar 53, Sangwan 5-44) by wickets

India Under-19s maintained their place atop Group B with a six-wicket win over their South African counterparts at the Kinrara Oval, one put into motion by left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan's five-for and completed courtesy a patient second-wicket stand of 95. India are virtually set for the Super League quarter-finals while South Africa, who could only muster 149 in 30.1 overs, need to beat Papua New Guinea handsomely to keep their hopes alive.
Wayne Parnell, South Africa's captain, thought the track looked good to bat on despite a couple of cracks but his decision came into question as Sangwan's seam yielded five wickets inside the second Powerplay. Sangwan, a left-arm seamer from Delhi whose idol is Wasim Akram, took a leaf out of the Pakistan legend's book. An impressively straight wrist position allowed him to land the new ball on an upright seam and that proved too good for South Africa.
Swinging his second delivery back off a good length, Sangwan trapped Pieter Malan plumb in front for his second duck in a row and bowled JJ Smuts with a lovely cutter that nipped past his tame forward defensive. Reeza Hendricks hooked a rare loose ball over fine leg for six but fell soon after, poking at a fuller delivery and edging to the wicketkeeper to make it 22 for 3. That quickly became 29 for 4 thanks to Sangwan's seam and an injudicious shot. Rilee Roussow took the side to the finish line against West Indies yesterday but failed to register against India. Looking to force the pace, he drove hard at a wide delivery and was well held by Ravindra Jadeja at first slip, diving to his left.
Sangwan was quickly given a 7-2 off-side field but didn't need it. Adjusting his line closer to the off stump he bent the ball back and sneaked it through Yaseen Vallie's expansive drive. Off stump was indeed pegged back and South Africa were in a complete mess at 45 for 5. Sangwan continues to make strides in his first season of full-time cricket.
A bit of urgency from Johnathan Vandiar stemmed the rot momentarily. The delightfully-named Napoleon Einstein was welcomed into the tournament with a towering six and Vandiar continued to thrash at anything marginally off length. Taking the cue, Parnell followed with chips over the infield the 50-run stand consumed just 33 deliveries.
The aggression couldn't be sustained and Parnell fell for 31, sweeping and missing Jadeja's left-arm spin in the 20th over. Jadeja yorked Jacobus Pienaar but couldn't get a hat-trick, and Vandiar brought up his fifty from 38 balls, with seven fours and a six. He was smartly stumped for 53 and the last wicket fell shortly.
India's chase wasn't pretty. Opening the attack, Parnell was nippy and troubled Shreevats Goswami before he had him caught at mid-off attempting a hit out of the park. From 21 for 1 India ticked along without hassle and went into lunch on 51 without further loss. Tanmay Srivastava and opener Taruvar Kohli struggled to place the ball into the gaps initially but the runs trickled in through a mixture of drives, nudges and miscued slashes.
Clayton August, the third left-arm seamer, should have got Taruvar on 29 but Bradley Barnes dropped a thin edge behind the stumps. Taruvar was reprieved again just after crossing his half-century from 105 balls when Parnell dropped a skied sitter at mid-on. With 34 to win from 17.3 overs Taruvar charged Parnell and Rossouw made no mistake at midwicket. Srivastava overcame a nervous start to progress to 47 from 61 balls but he followed Taruvar, clean bowled by one from Pieter Malan that stayed low. Saurabh Tiwary was unlucky to be given out lbw to one that pitched outside leg as the jitters continued. Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey knocked off the runs in the 42nd over.
Later, Ray Jennings, South Africa's coach, spoke of how his side was playing two games in two days and the effects were evident on a hot, muggy day.

Hosts Malaysia gave their fans plenty to cheer about as they beat Zimbabwe comprehensively courtesy a compact all-round performance in Johor. Zimbabwe's bowlers kept a tight leash over Malaysia, restricting them to 194 in their allotted 50 overs, but could only muster a disappointing 124 in reply. Malaysia's captain, Ahmed Faiz, top-scored with an even fifty while Shahid Ali Khan (40) and Faizal Abu Hasan (30) chipped in with vital knocks. Daniel Landman, the medium-pacer, starred for Zimbabwe with 3 for 34.
Chasing 125, Zimbabwe stuttered at regular intervals. Opener Tendai Mashonganyika's 24 from 42 balls was the best score of the innings and there were three 0s along the way. No real partnerships were allowed to form and Malaysia's Shahid Aslan, a right-arm medium-pacer, grabbed 3 for 41 to skittle out the lower order. The real damage, however, came from Aminudin Ramly (2 for 20 from ten) and offspinner Nik Azril (2 for 15 from eight), who kept a tight hold over the scoring. This win has done plenty for Malaysia's confidence.
West Indies U-19s 319 (Jacobs 101, Powell 60, Bravo 59, Nou 4-63) beat Papua New Guinea U-19s 143 (Dawes 4-25) by 176 runs
Scorecard

Steven Jacobs smashed an 86-ball 101 as West Indies rattled 319 against Papua New Guinea in Kuala Lumpur and the minnows folded under the mountain of runs. A total of 143 was all they could post in reply, failing to bat out their full quota of overs.
West Indies also had handy contributions from Darren Bravo, the brother of the more illustrious Dwayne, who clattered 59 and Keiran Powell, who got the innings off to a rollicking start with a 35-ball 60. Loa Nou, the medium-pacer, ended with 4 for 63 but there was little else to speak of. Jason Dawes, West Indies' opening bowler, added four or his own to rock PNG's top order. No. 3 Tony Ura hit a breezy 31 from 21 balls but failed to press on and with no substantial partnerships formed, PNG wilted under the run rate and were all out in 37.1 overs.
Bangladesh U-19s 126 for 2 (Ashraful Hossain 71*) beat Ireland U-19s 123 (Mahmudul 4-17) by eight wickets
Scorecard

Bangladesh coolly knocked off a target of 124 with eight wickets in hand, as opener Ashraful Hossain hit an unbeaten 71 to support a polished effort in the field against Ireland in Kuala Lampur.
It all went Bangladesh's way from the start. Offspinner Mahmudul Hasan's four-wicket haul shot Ireland out for 123 in 43.4 overs, with only James Shannon contributing a patient 73-ball 31. Bangladesh pegged away with wickets at regular intervals to set themselves a meager total. Ashraful and Mohammad Mithun (31 from 24 balls) then launched an opening stand of 63 in 9.2 overs. Ticking along at a strike-rate of nearly 90, Ashraful collected 14 boundaries in his innings and the runs were knocked off in the 23rd over.
Sri Lanka U-19s 247 for 7 (Thirrimanne 68, Silva 51*) beat Namibia U-19s 84 (Pathirana 4-31) by 163 runs
Scorecard
Namibia proved no challenge for Sri Lanka, who made 247 for 7 and then bowled out the opposition for just 84 in Penang. Having elected to bat, Sri Lanka were boosted by half-centuries from Lahiru Thirimanne and Roshen Silva. Sri Lanka's batsmen shared vital partnerships to close in on the 250-mark and Namibia, using eight bowlers, couldn't keep them from posting a healthy total.
Their batting, however, was pitiful. Opener Seann Silver was bowled by Denuwan Fernando first ball as the scoring was suffocated from the get-go. Raymond van Schoor held up one end with a 53-ball 16 but the rest fell like nine-pins. Fernando finished with an economical 3-19 and Sachith Parithana picked up a handy 4-31 to run through the middle and lower orders.
