KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have secretly tested their dope-tainted pacers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif only to find out that they are still carrying traces of banned anabolic steroid nandrolone, sources said on Monday.

According to the sources, the PCB have carried out secret dope tests of the two players, who were banned for using nandrolone last year before earning a reprieve from a PCB appeals committee.

The results, according to the sources, have only proved the Board’s worst nightmare true as the players have again tested positive for nandrolone. However, there has been no official confirmation of the dope tests. The PCB have announced that they would carry out dope tests of all the 15 players selected to represent the country in next month’s World Cup in the West Indies.

According to PCB’s Director Operations Saleem Altaf, the tests would be carried out on February 16. The reason behind another round of internal dope tests by the PCB is to avoid any unpleasant surprises during the World Cup.

However, sources said that the Board decided to test Shoaib and Asif before schedule to secretly check whether they are still carrying traces of nandrolone. If selected for the World Cup, Shoaib and Asif would certainly be tested for illegal drugs by the ICC which has already announced introducing ‘target testing’ during the tournament.

The ICC have also supported World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) decision to challenge the lifting of drug bans on Shoaib and Asif by an appeals committee. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to begin hearing the case against the Pakistani bowlers in Switzerland within the next few seeks. According to experts, Shoaib and Asif may get a life ban if they test positive for any illegal substance during the World Cup as it would be their second doping offence.

Pak defers dope tests on Akhtar, Asif

LAHORE, Feb 18: Pakistan completed dope tests on all but three of their World Cup 15-man squad and five reserves, as tests on Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif were deferred, an official said on Sunday.

"Asif is in England for a reassessment of his elbow injury and on his return will give a test, in the next few days. I have no official information on Akhtar's return home, but hopefully he too will appear soon," said Pakistan Cricket Board anti-doping official Sohail Ahmed.

Akhtar was also in England having a reassessment of a knee injury which threatens his chances of featuring in the World Cup, starting in the Caribbean from March 13.

Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was the last player to be tested on Sunday, while allrounder Shahid Afridi will appear this week upon his return from England, where he was playing in a charity match.

All the players were directed to appear for dope tests before the training camp for the World Cup starts, from February 22.

Ahmed said urine samples would be sent to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in the next couple of days and he hoped results would be received in a week.

The PCB decided to have pre-World Cup dope tests to avoid the embarrassment of any mishap in the mega event, where the International Cricket Council (ICC) will conduct target testing.

PCB send medical reports on Shoaib and Asif to ICC - Khalid Hussain

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finally made a formal request to the ICC to allow for the inclusion of Mohammad Sami and Yasir Arafat for the World Cup as replacements for Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif. In another significant move, the PCB also received the complete medical reports on the injuries to Shoaib and Asif from its medical commission.
"We received comprehensive reports on the injuries of Shoaib and Asif which have now been sent to the ICC along with a request for the inclusion of Sami and Arafat," Dr Ahsan Malik, the PCB's director of communications, told The News. He said that the PCB is expecting a clearance from the World Cup Technical Committee shortly, adding that Sami would fly to the West Indies early on Tuesday. Arafat would wait for the result of his dope test before flying to Trinidad later this week.
Pakistan pulled out Shoaib and Asif from their 15-man squad last week saying that both would take at least three weeks to recover from injury problems. However, there were widespread suspicions that the players were withdrawn because of doping-related problems after they skipped the dope tests made mandatory by the PCB for participation in the World Cup. The PCB has denied all such speculations and opted to release the complete medical reports of the two players.
The medical commission, that includes Dr Sohail Saleem, Dr Waqar Farooqi (orthopaedic surgeon) and Dr Zia Farooqi (radiologist), met at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore to reassess the injuries of Shoaib and Asif. According to the report, Shoaib was initially examined by the medical commission on January 29 for his left hamstring injury and was advised three weeks of rehabilitation. He was able to bowl a few overs on February 23 and 24 but complained of significant pain in the left knee and in the left hamstring muscles and was advised not to bowl any further.
In a recent examination, Shoaib had some tenderness over the medial joint line of left knee. He also had some discomfort in the left hamstring when stressed.
"In view of these findings we recommend that Shoaib should continue with the supervised rehabilitation programme. However, he is not allowed to bowl unless he is re-examined by the commission in three weeks time," the report stated.
Asif's report said that he complained of pain in his right elbow for the first time in a warm-up game during Pakistan tour of England last summer. He was sent back to Pakistan and returned after four weeks. He suffered a recurrence of the problem during the tour of South Africa recently, taking pain killers to play in the ODI series and was selected for the World Cup.
However, Asif developed similar problems while bowling during the training camp but was encouraged to bowl with the pain. The report said that in a recent examination, the commission found that Asif had some tenderness over the lateral attachment of right triceps muscle in the olecranon. The last 10 degrees of flexion as well as extension were restricted because of pain.
"We recommend Asif to give rest to his right elbow for three weeks initially," the report stated. "He has been advised not to use his right arm for lifting anything or driving. He is also advised to wear an elbow support. He should have supervised rehabilitation for the next three weeks when the commission will reassess him and if every thing goes well, he may be allowed graduated bowling in the nets."

Re: PCB send medical reports on Shoaib and Asif to ICC - Khalid Hussain

Well I guess PCB had the last laugh. Since the Champiosn trophy every decision by PCB has been blasted by everyone. Selection of players, coaching, captainship. And since champions trophy every PCB decusion ahs turned out to be the right one. Lets include imran nazir, oops shined only in one game proving again why he was dropped. Y shabbir is not there, 5 overs bowled, runs leakd like crazy and promptly njured (waseem Bari had said he is not fot to play), Shoaib should have been included (PCB he is not fit), he is fit, one spell n out of WC. lolz now it turns out PCB initial claim that they r ready to take on WADA and doping had nothing to do with exlcusion of Asif n Shoiab but was medical problem is right too. Well u will be judge n do share r tots:P
