Looking Forward to Challenger - Sehwag
Even as Team India slugs it out against Australia, one man is waiting in Delhi for another oppurtunity to don national colours. Virender Sehwag will captain India Blues at the Challenger Trophy and he spoke exclusively to CNN-IBN's Sports Editor Gaurav Kalra.
Gaurav Kalra: Viru, thank you for talking to us. What are your expectations from the Challenger?
Virender Sehwag: I'm looking forward to it as I will get another opportunity in domestic cricket to perform well and get back into the side. It's good for me and good for the youngsters who are playing for the first time in the Challenger Trophy.
I think it will be exciting for everybody, so everyone will be looking forward to the Challenger Series. So hopefully you will get to see some good cricket in the Challenger.
Gaurav Kalra: And personally for you, a chance to bat again. You will probably get three games if the event goes well for you.
Virender Sehwag: It's a good opportunity for me to just play against Mohammad Kaif and Parthiv Patel's sides and just go there and enjoy my cricket, play hard and wait for my turn to come again and perform at the international level.
Gaurav Kalra: One other thing will be that you are captain. You can remind everyone that in future if they are looking for a captain, there is someone who has been vice-captain (of the Indian side) before and can do the job?
Virender Sehwag: I'm not looking for captaincy. I'm just looking for a chance to play in domestic cricket or, maybe, in international cricket. Captaincy will come if you perform well. So I'm not worried about captaincy.
I think Dhoni is doing a great job and he deserves the captaincy. He did well in the Twenty20 World Championship and is doing well against Australia. Australia are a tough side and it's not easy playing against the world champions. But so far he has done well.
Gaurav Kalra: Are you disappointed that you had even a single chance in the seven games?
Virender Sehwag: I am not fully fit for selection. That's why they didn't pick me, because I got injured in South Africa against Australia in the semi-final.
But now I'm fully fit, I'm working hard on my fitness and practising with the (Delhi) Ranji Trophy team. Hopefully, I will perform well in the Twenty20 game (against Australia). So I'm just looking forward to that game.
Gaurav Kalra: Personally you must be happy showing off that you can still bat at this level the way you used to and be successful.
Virender Sehwag: Of course, I have always said that. I haven't changed my technique, I am just changing my temperament and changing my approach as an opener. So, I'm just trying to leave a few balls and wait for the boundary ball, and it is helping me a lot.
Gaurav Kalra: What is it like now, when you sit at home and watch the games?
Virender Sehwag: I don't watch whole matches, I only end up watching Yuvraj, Sachin and Ganguly. It's very frustrating for me to watch entire matches and ask myself 'Why am I sitting here? Why am I not playing?' I just watch these three players and after that I switch off the TV and practise or go out shopping or whatever.
