Kanpur ODI will be played on November 11
Change in Pakistan's tour itinerary
Cricinfo staff
October 13, 2007
The third ODI of Pakistan's tour of India which was scheduled for November 12 in Kanpur will now be played on November 11. The reason, BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah said, was because the Indian board wanted the match to be held on a Sunday.
As a result of that change, the first and second ODIs have also been brought forward by a day. The first match will now be played on November 5 and the second on November 8.
The Pakistan Cricket Board was keen to fit in a Twenty20 match during the tour to raise funds for the Bob Woolmer cricket academy but PCB Chairman Nasim Ashraf said the Indian board had rejected the proposal.
"They [BCCI] say that since the ICC has kept a cap of seven Twenty20 matches a year for all teams, they can't fit in this match this season," Ashraf told PTI. "But we feel this is a match for a noble cause and something can be managed. We are still trying to convince the Indian board to review the situation. We are very keen to do something for Woolmer's academy and if it is not possible on this tour we will look at other alternatives as well."
Gill Woolmer, Bob's wife, had sent a letter to the Pakistan and Indian boards requesting them to play a Twenty20 international to raise funds for the academy which Woolmer had established in his hometown of Cape Town.

Re: Pakistan V India - All news here - Pakistan tour of India

'Shoaib & Co. give Pakistan an edge'

Even as the India-Australia ODI series comes to an end, the Men in Blue need to get their act together soon enough as Pakistan come visiting.
And former Pakistan captain Imran Khan believes Shoaib Akhtar and his fast bowling partners give Pakistan the edge. CNN-IBN's Sanjeeb Mukherjea caught up with the legend for an exclusive chat.
Sanjeeb Mukherjea: What are your thoughts on the upcoming India-Pakistan series?
Imran Khan: Well, it is a bit early. First, we have to see India's performance against Australia, which hasn't been that good. And then Pakistan's performance against South Africa which is even anything being worse. So, let us see the end of this series and then we will be in a better position to judge.
Sanjeeb Mukherjea: New teams, new captains and a total new chapters for both India and Pakistan cricket. How do you see the whole situation panning out over the next six months?
Imran Khan: Both captains have initially done well. Both have the potential but let's just see them over a period of time and then I will be able to give you my better assessment.
Sanjeeb Mukherjea: Are you happy that Shoaib has been let off and given one more chance by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to perhaps perform to his true potentials this time?
Imran Khan: Shoaib is an asset. Anyone who can bowl that fast, who is a match winner and given that the other bowlers are also good - Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul. So, this will give Pakistan the edge and remember the series is in December when the wickets have got a bit of a juice in them.

Bhajji keen to make an impact against Pak

Amit Bose | CNN-IBN
Harbhajan Singh could manage only three wickets in the six ODIs he played recently against Australia, but that hasn't dampened his spirits. He is now working hard to make an impact against Pakistan.
It is a rare break for a cricketer like Harbhajan Singh and it was time fulfil some family commitments. Harbhajan's family has opened a swanking new sports show room in Jalandhar and the offie was there to support to them. But what ever may be the occasion the Harbahjan's focus in on the upcoming Indo-Pak series.
"An Indo-Pak series is always a very crucial one. And we will surely try and do well in this series and if we are able to come up with a good performance that will surely boost our confidence going into the tour of Australia," said Harbhajan.
The recently concluded India Australia One-Day series was played with lot fire and it is being termed as one of most ill-tempered series in recent memory. But for an experienced campaigner like Harbhajan it was almost like a daily routine.
"It is a little secret that Australians always indulge in the mental warfare and they pass comments to instigate the opposition, so that they react in a certain manner. But, we will all just have to keep our focus right," said Harbhajan.
It is a new look Team India with a mix of youth and experience and a new skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the helm and despite the loss in the One-Day series he has full faith on his leader.
"Dhoni is a very good captain. And as he is young captain he has to learn a lot on his way and we are all there to support him. He is a great guy," said Harbhajan.
This is a much needed short break perhaps too short given the volume of cricket being played by India but like very cricket fan in the country, a series win over the arch-rivals Pakistan is what this man is also wishing for.

Fast bowler set to be picked for India tour
'Shoaib has a point to prove' - Ashraf

Nasim Ashraf, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, has asked Shoaib Akhtar to fulfil his role as a senior player and prove his critics wrong with a forceful performance during the tour of India, which begins in the first week of November.

National selector Saleem Jaffer, who followed Shoaib's progress in a domestic match, cleared him for selection and the fast bowler was likely to be included in the squad for the five-ODI and three-Test series in India.

"The tour of India is certainly the most important assignment for our team and is perhaps even more important than the World Cup," Ashraf told the News. "I expect that all the players, including Shoaib Akhtar, would be at their best behaviour and give 100%.

"I hope that Shoaib will be a changed man on the tour of India," Ashraf said. "It is his last chance and we all hope that this time he would not waste it. He also has a point to prove and should give his best to silence his critics who believe he is a spent force."
The fourth ODI between Pakistan and South Africa in Multan marks the end of Shoaib's 13-match ban for a number of breaches of discipline, including a dressing-room spat with Mohammad Asif before the World Twenty20 in South Africa. He will be available for selection for the final ODI in Lahore on October 29.

Panel wants to observe Dhoni for longer
Indian selectors delay Test-captaincy decision

India's national selectors have deferred the appointment of a Test captain, which was scheduled to happen during the selection committee meeting in Ahmedabad on Saturday. The focus of the meeting will now be on the squad for the first two ODIs of the series against Pakistan beginning on November 5.
Bhupinder Singh, the North Zone selector, said that the selection panel wanted to observe Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy for a while longer before taking a decision on the Test captaincy.
"We had originally decided to watch Dhoni for 12 games and it's only five games now so we will have to wait," Bhupinder told Cricinfo. He, without confirming, indicated that the announcement could happen at the next selection meeting on November 8 in Mohali, when the squad for the rest of the ODI series against Pakistan would be announced.
Dhoni, who led India to the World Twenty20 title in his first assignment as captain, is one of two chief contenders for the Test captaincy along with Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar is also widely tipped for the job after two earlier stints during which he led India in 25 Tests.
With India's search for a full-time coach producing no results, former India and Mumbai opener Lalchand Rajput is likely to be retained as the interim cricket manager for the home series against Pakistan. The announcement is expected to be made during the selection meeting on Saturday.

The team for the Pakistan one-dayers
Four questions for India's selectors
Siddhartha Vaidyanathan
October 26, 2007
The Challenger Series may provide the Indian national selectors with an idea of the bench strength available to them, but the October 27 meeting to pick the national side for the first two one-dayers against Pakistan is likely to focus on players who aren't in Ahmedabad. Cricinfo looks at the four key questions the selectors will need to answer
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
Tendulkar is widely tipped for the Test captaincy, and his experience in the job may give him the edge © Getty Images

The big three
Phasing out Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid is expected to be the moot point, and the selectors need to decide what direction to take. The clamour for youth has turned louder, especially after the World Twenty20 win in South Africa, and the selectors realise that giving in will allow them to groom a young and athletic side for the future.
The most logical option seems to be to play two of the three per game, resting the third on a rotation basis, but it's a move that's unlikely to be approved unanimously. Leaving Sachin Tendulkar out may be too thorny an issue for the selectors to handle; his scintillating one-day form - he has averaged 47.55 since June this year, with eight half-centuries - also works in his favour, as does the fact that he's tipped to be offered the Test captaincy.
Sourav Ganguly, averaging 40.12, with six fifties, since June, doesn't have similar leeway but his bowling, some selectors feel, adds an extra dimension to the side. However, the one whose spot is most under threat is Dravid, who has struggled in his last ten ODIs, with an average of 8.88.
Dravid has reached double figures on just three occasions, and missed out on the final one-dayer against Australia in Mumbai, where he was replaced by Dinesh Karthik. With promising middle-order batsmen like S Badrinath and Rohit Sharma pushing for slots, the selectors, it is understood, are inclined to "rest" Dravid, for the opening two matches at least.
The Test captaincy
The other big announcement concerns the Test captaincy, though the selectors may decide to wait a bit longer. When the moment arrives it's widely expected to be a two-horse race featuring Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Tendulkar. A two-captain policy, one for Tests and the other for the shorter formats, is unprecedented in India but the chances of Tendulkar being given another shot at the job, one that he last held in 2000, look increasingly likely at the moment.
With a big home series against Pakistan and an equally important away assignment in Australia coming up, the selectors might decide to offer the reins to the most experienced hand in Indian cricket. Tendulkar's Test captaincy record, spread over two terms, is a woeful one - he has won just four of 25 Tests - but the respect he commands from the entire side, and his talismanic value, would work in his favour. The selectors have three other options in front of them - India's winning-est captain, Ganguly, legspinner Anil Kumble, and middle-order batsman VVS Laxman - but these seem to be candidates only on paper.

With Harbhajan Singh back in the frame, Powar and Chawla may not be automatic picks © AFP

Opening gambit
If Tendulkar and Ganguly keep their places, as is expected, it would be interesting to see which other opening options are considered. A few cracking cameos in the World Twenty20 gave Virender Sehwag an opening, but he faces stiff competition from his Delhi team-mate Gautam Gambhir. Sehwag was dropped from the one-day squad midway through the series against Australia but Gambhir staked a claim with a match-winning knock in the one-off Twenty20. Robin Uthappa is the other opener in the fray but his ability to adjust to the middle order, and to up the ante when the field is spread out, should win him a place in any case.
How to spin?
The England tour saw the emergence of Ramesh Powar and Piyush Chawla as India's new spin-combination but a lot has changed since. Both are fighting for spots with a couple of experienced hands, Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik, who have brought themselves back into the picture. Harbhajan has used the Twenty20 format to resurrect his one-day career while Kartik, varying his pace and length, turned in one fine spell after another against Australia.
Chawla, a revelation in the one-dayers in England, has recently returned from injury, but it will be surprising if the selectors recall him straight away. Powar was India's best bowler in the ODI series against England but insipid in the first three games against Australia. He might need to do more, with both ball and fitness, to regain his berth. A few months ago the Indian spin cupboard appeared bare; suddenly, it seems, the selectors are spoilt for choice.

Shoaib Akhtar has been named in the Pakistan's 16-man squad for the five-match ODI series against India.
Shoaib has also been called up for the series-decider against South Africa in Lahore on October 29, having served the 13-match ban imposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The fast bowler was punished by the board for his spat with Mohammad Asif ahead of the ICC World Twenty20. Shoaib was sent home following the incident.
The team, led by Shoaib Malik, also includes Fawad Alam, who played his first and only ODI so far against Sri Lanka earlier this year.
"We have chosen a 16-man squad which will be led by Shoaib Malik and Akhtar was included in the squad after he proved his fitness and completed his ban," Salahuddin Ahmed, the chief selector, told AFP. "We know that Akhtar, if fit and in form, is an asset for the team and we hope that he does well in the series against India." Injuries, testing positive to banned substances, and controversies with team-mates have kept Shoaib out of international cricket for most of the previous season. His last ODI was in England in 2006.
No vice-captain has been named for the team, with Salman Butt, Malik's deputy in the series against South Africa, failing to find a place in the playing XI. In fact he didn't feature in any of the ODIs against South Africa. Ahmed said a vice-captain would be named before the team leaves for India.
Mohammad Hafeez, who had been dropped mid-way through the ODIs against South Africa, and Khalid Latif, his replacement for the third ODI, also miss out.
Pakistan ODI squad Shoaib Malik (capt), Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Kamran Akmal (wk), Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Imran Nazir, Fawad Alam, Abdur Rehman, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Iftikhar Anjum.

India's selection challenges
Plan now for 2011
VB Chandrasekhar
October 26, 2007
The inability to make long-term choices consistently has been a handicap for India's selection panels down the years. And the latest one has to deal with how to go about phasing senior players out of the side as well. VB Chandrasekhar, who served as South Zone selector from 2004 to 2006 on the panel chaired by Kiran More looks at the challenges ahead of the current committee as it tries to build a team for 2011.

When the Indian selectors sit down to pick the one-day team for the Pakistan series, one of the most important things for them consider would be: are we picking a team for the next series or are we building a team for the 2011 World Cup? It's not easy to get that balance right, especially since India have a few senior players who are still pulling their weight, even though some of them will definitely not playing in the next World Cup.
I remember Rahul Dravid saying a few years back - and he was not even captain then -- that it's important for players to have 60 to 70 one-day internationals behind them when they go to the World Cup. During my tenure we tried to blood guys like Suresh Raina, Venugopal Rao and RP Singh, but our committee wasn't there by the time the 2007 World Cup arrived. The new committee had different ideas and whatever we were trying to do was nullified, and the team that went to the World Cup didn't look prepared. In turn, the same thing might happen with this committee.
That's why continuity is crucial. There needs to be an architect with vision and clear ideas working on building the ideal formation for 2011. The pieces will not fall in to place at one go, but as long as you have a clear picture in mind, you'll know what pieces to look for. If you take every step in the present with an eye on the future, three years down the line you might get the combination right.
As far as the senior players go, the problem is that the selectors are expecting the players themselves to make the move; they expect the players to come out and say, "I am going play till next year." It should be the other way round. It should be the selectors taking them aside and telling them, "We may not have you in 2011, so how do we phase you out? When do you want us to take the big step?" The senior players deserve that.
What was done to Sourav Ganguly the last time was wrong. I was part of that committee, and I felt that we should have taken him into confidence and explained our position to him. To me, one should be decent enough to say, "You have served the country for long and you deserve a royal exit." But it never happened. He was dropped and then he came back.

If Sachin Tendulkar says he's planning to stay on till 2011, it's then up to the selectors to decide if he fits in their scheme of things. However great he is as a player, he is going to be getting on in years by the time the next World Cup comes around, so it will be a tough call.
With Rahul Dravid, quite a few things have happened in a very short time, most importantly him quitting the captaincy, and India winning the Twenty20 World Cup, showing the kind of energy which was lacking in their one-day cricket. But if I were a selector, I wouldn't be taking a call on current form. Dravid has been around for ten years and has pulled his weight in the one-day side, and anyone can have a bad series. What would matter to me is how he fits into the broad picture. I wouldn't want to be left with too little time to build the 2011 team.
From what I know of Dravid, I know he understands what it takes to build a side. If he were to say, "I am looking at the one-dayers in Australia, and I am willing to sit out if I can't perform," then I will go with him.
If you are serious about rotation, identify who your 20 players are and then rotate them. It's important for players like S Badrinath or Rohit Sharma to know where they stand. You can't just pick someone for one tournament; there has to be a method to it. Don't use rotation as a policy of convenience when the senior players are failing.
Lastly, it's the stupidest thing, to announce a team in the middle of a tournament. I can give my own example here. In 1988, I scored a hundred on the last day of the Irani Trophy and the team was chosen on the third, and I then didn't make to the team until a few months. It's important to pick a player when he's on a high.

Selectors' dilemma: Experience or youth

Ahmedabad: With every passing day the clamour for youth is getting louder in Indian cricket. And the Indian selectors will have to tread carefully as they select the team for the Pakistan series.
"We have to pick the best team all the time," said Dilip Vengsarkar, the Chairman of Selectors.
Selecting an Indian team can be as difficult as making that perfect cup of coffee. The wise men have promised to give the perfect blend but it is still to be seen what is the mix of youth and experience in the team for the first two ODIs against Pakistan will be.
The Board wants performing youngsters to be given proper chances, but at the same time its not easy to drop people like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar or Sourav Ganguly.
If they tilt towards youth then Rahul Dravid may be the first one to get rest. Although, the team management seems very keen on having these men around.
"He (Dravid) is having a tough time but then are other batsmen also. So, it is not like he is the only one who is going through this phase. It has happened to many a batsmen in the past as well, it has happended to me, to Sachin , to everyone," said India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The Selectors are keen to give regular chances to the likes of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa. And at the same time they don't want to embarass players like Dravid or Ganguly by making them sit on the bench. However, the Challenger series has thrown up a few contenders already.
"Those who have performed here (at the Challenger's trophy) will stand a good chance. There are thoese who were injured and have come back and then there are those who were out of form, have also regained it. So, it is a good platform for all those to come back to the team," said Vengsarkar.
The fog over the Test captaincy still exists though. Sources have confirmed to CNN-IBN that the selectors want to see bit more of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership before they choose between him and Sachin Tendulkar.
The Captain for the three Test series will be announced on 8th of November after the second One-Dayer in Mohali.

Pakistan have recalled controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for the series-deciding one-day international against South Africa in Lahore.
Shoaib, who has completed a 13-match ban imposed on him by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is in the squad for Monday's fifth and final one-dayer.
He is also in the Pakistan squad for next month's one-day series in India.
"He remains a key player and will boost the pace attack for the Indian tour," said chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed.

Shoaib was sent home from the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in September after he struck fellow paceman Mohammad Asif with a bat during a brawl before the tournament started.
He was banned for 13 matches and fined £28,000 for four breaches of the code of conduct.
Shoaib was also put on probation for two years which means if he is again found guilty of violating the PCB's code of conduct he could be banned for life.
Pakistan will name the squad for the three Tests in India at a later date.
