Ponting cleared to tour India
Melbourne: The Australian cricket team breathed a huge sigh of relief on Thursday when captain Ricky Ponting was cleared for the upcoming seven-match One-Day series in India.
Cricket Australia's National Selection Panel confirmed that Ponting, who suffered a hamstring strain during the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa, would remain in the squad for the tour of India.
The right-hander was, however, ruled out of any further participation in the Twenty20 tournament, in which Australia reached the last four by defeating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Cape Town on Thursday.
Ponting would continue his rehabilitation in South Africa before departing with the rest of the Australian squad next week, NSP Chairman Andrew Hilditch said.
"Ricky Ponting is making excellent progress following his hamstring strain in the game against Pakistan on Tuesday. Ricky will be coming on the Travelex Tour of India and will resume playing as soon as he is medically cleared," Hilditch was quoted as saying in a Cricket Australia release.
The Australian team is scheduled to depart South Africa for India on September 25 for a tour which will also feature a Twenty20 game. The first match is scheduled for September 29 in Bangalore.
However, it is not certain whether Ponting would be able to play in all the matches in India and Brad Haddin has been added to the touring party as cover.
"Brad Haddin has been added to the touring squad and will take part in the Indian tour until such time as Ricky recovers.
"Although Ricky's injury is very disappointing, it gives us an opportunity to recognise the outstanding performances of Brad Haddin domestically and in his limited opportunities for Australia in the past 12 months," the statement said.
Physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Ponting was making good progress.
"Ricky Ponting is making good progress in the early stages of his injury and is on track to take some part in the tour of India," he said.
The physio also said all-rounder Shane Watson would be assessed over the next 48 hours after leaving the field during the game against Sri Lanka with hamstring soreness.
"Shane felt some soreness in the left hamstring during Thursday's game and we will continue to assess this over the next 48 hours before any decision is made regarding his availability."

India's coaching saga
India unlikely to have coach for Australia ODIs

India have a new captain for the seven-match home ODI series against Australia, but they are "extremely unlikely" to have a new coach by then. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India had initially hoped to appoint a coach before the series, the chances of that happening now appear slim.
The BCCI advertised for the post of coach on leading cricket board websites on August 27 and set September 15 as a deadline before which interested candidates could write in. Cricinfo has learnt that the BCCI has received close to 20 applications in all, both from India and abroad, for the post.
However, the committee constituted to decide on the next course of action to be taken in appointing the coach may not be able to meet on September 27, the date earlier fixed for this purpose. The committee - comprising former Indian captains Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and S Venkataraghavan, the board secretary, Niranjan Shah, the joint secretary, Mohinder Pandove and the treasurer, N Srinivasan - was constituted to pick the next coach. However, Gavaskar and Shastri are both in South Africa, commentating on the ICC World Twenty20 and are only likely to return to India on September 26 or 27.
A top board source revealed that the board is already on the look-out for a cricket manager for the seven-match series. Even if the committee meets on September 27 and reviews the applications it has received, and short-lists candidates for the post, it will not be able to complete the interview process before the Australia series, which begins in Bangalore on September 29.
"We will probably have to appoint someone as cricket manager for the home series against Australia," the source said. "We are looking for likely candidates and will even consider some of the Indians who have applied for the coach's job."
The most prominent among the Indians who have applied for the job is Chandrakant Pandit who has had successful coaching stints with Mumbai, India A and Maharashtra. But, only recently, he was not released from his duty at Maharashtra, and was replaced as India A coach by Paras Mhambrey.
With India enjoying considerably more success than was expected in some quarters at the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa, the possibility that Lalchand Rajput, who is doing the job of cricket manager, getting an extension for the home series, cannot be ruled out. However, there have been rumblings in some sections of the board that too many plum posts are going to former cricketers from the West Zone. With Sharad Pawar, the president, Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors, and Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer, all coming from West Zone, it has been whispered that former players from Mumbai are getting more opportunities as managers and coaches than others. The BCCI is keen to show that it is not parochial in its appointments.
Richard Done, Tim Boon, Kepler Wessels, Terry Oliver, Dave Nosworthy and Martin Crowe are some of the applicants for the coaching position from overseas.
Done was once head of the Queensland Academy of Excellence, and took over as an ICC High Performance manager in 2004 when Bob Woolmer joined Pakistan and left the post vacant. Done recently interviewed for the job of Pakistan coach but lost out to fellow Australian Geoff Lawson.
Oliver succeeded Bennett King as the Queensland coach in 2002 after King took up the West Indies job, but it appears that his candidature will be ruled out as the advertisement issued by the BCCI stipulates that candidates should have played "at least first-class cricket." Oliver, who played club and grade cricket in Australia, never played first-class cricket.
There's also Tim Boon, the former Leicerstershire batsman, who has served as assistant coach of the England team, who now coaches Leicerstershire. A while ago the BCCI received an application from Boon, although Paul Maylard-Mason, the chief executive of the Leicestershire County Cricket Club, issued a statement saying Boon was not in the race for the India job. Maylard-Mason insisted that Boon was committed to Leicestershire. Sources indicate that Boon has personally indicated his genuine interest in the India job, but the Indian board will be wary given their recent experience with Graham Ford.
Wessels, the former Australia and South Africa international, it is learned, reached Indian officials through a senior Indian cricketer, expressing an interest in the job. Wessels has coaching experience in England, with counties including Northamptonshire but has not coached an international team.
Nosworthy, who coaches Canterbury, has in the past coached teams in South Africa, where he played first-class cricket for Border and Northern Transvaal.
Crowe's case is a curious one. His application was first forwarded to the BCCI by "a well-wisher" and Crowe said he had no idea that his CV had reached the BCCI. Later, though, he admitted that could be interested in the job under favourable circumstances.

Australian allrounder Shane Watson will miss the upcoming ODI series against India after suffering a sore hamstring during the win against Sri Lanka on Thursday in the ICC World Twenty20.
"Shane Watson experienced some left hamstring soreness during yesterday's game. This is similar to the pain he had prior to this tour," said Alex Kountouris, the team's physiotherapist. "Although this is a low-grade muscular strain the decision has been made for Shane to return to Australia and prepare himself for the upcoming Australian season."
No decision had been taken regarding a replacement for Watson. Australia were scheduled to depart from South Africa for India on September 25 to play a seven-match ODI series and one Twenty20 game. The first match was scheduled for September 29 in Bangalore.

Injured Hussey misses India tour
Australia's injury problems continue with batsman Mike Hussey ruled out of their one-day series in India.
Hussey picked up the injury during Australia's loss to India
He strained his left hamstring during Saturday's World Twenty20 semi-final defeat by India in South Africa.
Captain Ricky Ponting and all-rounder Shane Watson have been hit by similar injuries in the last week and James Hopes will replace Watson in India.
Nathan Bracken, meanwhile, will miss part of the tour in order to be at home for the birth of his first child.
The series in India begins in Bangalore next Saturday and the schedule includes six more one-day internationals and a Twenty20 game crammed into a three-week trip.
Team physio Alex Kountouris believes Australia's hectic schedule may be one of the reasons for the current plague of injuries.
"In the last two weeks we have experienced a high incidence of hamstring injuries which is atypical for the Australian cricket team," he said.
"There is no one separate reason for the problem but it is possible that the hectic nature of Twenty20 cricket combined with soft grounds and the high frequency of travel may have provided the additional stress required to cause injury in players who are at the start of their cricketing season and therefore lack conditioning."
Ponting still hopes to play a part in the series in India, although Brad Haddin has already been added to the squad as cover.
The inclusion of Hopes, meanwhile, provides the squad with a like for like replacement for Watson, who has struggled with injuries for much of the year.
Hopes has played nine one-dayers and two Twenty20 internationals, the most recent against Bangladesh in April.
"James has performed extremely well during Australia A's recent tour of Pakistan and will now have a chance to impress on the tour of India," said chief selector Andrew Hilditch.

India will be without leg-spinner Piyush Chawla for their forthcoming seven-match one-day series against Australia, beginning on 30 September.
Chawla set to austarlia series
The 18-year-old suffered an ankle injury during a training session at the World Twenty20 Cup in South Africa.
"He has been advised six weeks rest," said Indian board secretary Niranjan Shah. "We will decide on a replacement in a day or two." Chawla took six wickets in India recent one-day series loss to England.
Hope they give Rohit Sharma a Chance in Middle now ...
Hopes replaces injured Watson
Australia lose Hussey for India tour

Australia's injury concerns have worsened ahead of their limited-overs tour of India with Michael Hussey ruled out of the trip due to a strained left hamstring. Hussey is the third Australian to come out of the ICC World Twenty20 carrying a hamstring injury with Shane Watson already missing the India tour and Ricky Ponting expected to sit out the opening games.
James Hopes will join the squad in Watson's place while Brad Haddin, initially added as a cover for Ponting, has now been named as Hussey's replacement. Adam Voges, the Western Australia middle-order batsman who was leading Australia A in their tour of Pakistan this month, will travel with the group until Ponting recovers.
Hussey suffered his problem during the loss to India on Saturday and Alex Kountouris, the team physio, said it was unusual for Australia to experience so many soft-tissue injuries. "There is no one separate reason for the problem," Kountouris said.
"But it is possible that the hectic nature of Twenty20 cricket combined with soft grounds and the high frequency of travel may have provided the additional stress required to cause injury in players who are at the start of their cricketing season and therefore lack conditioning. He [Hussey] will continue to be assessed over the next 48 hours in South Africa before returning home to continue his rehabilitation."
Kountouris also said there had been question-marks over Brad Hodge and Haddin, both with hamstring soreness. He said the pair was "hanging by a thread" and Hodge might not have played had Australia reached the Twenty20 final. "He will be right in a week," Kountouris said. "He's just hanging in there. It's just sore and tight so I think it will be fine."
Hopes' call-up is reward for his strong domestic season in 2006-07 as well as a productive tour of Pakistan with Australia A this month. He made 144 in a Test against Pakistan A and took five wickets in the two-match series, as well as striking 55 in the first one-day game of the tour. Voges averaged 44.33 in the three ODIs against Pakistan A.
Bracken was granted leave to return home as his wife prepares to give birth to their first child. Hilditch said Bracken was unlikely to miss the whole series.
"It is anticipated Nathan will rejoin the squad in India as soon as possible," Hilditch said. "At this stage no replacement player has been called upon and we will take this on a day-by-day basis."
The squad is scheduled to fly straight to India from South Africa on Tuesday ahead of the seven ODI series. The first match is at Bangalore on Saturday.
