South African board regrets Kallis' decision to resign
Tuesday, 14 August 2007

Johannesburg, Aug 14 - South African cricket authorities have expressed their disappointment over the public announcement by Jacques Kallis that he had resigned as national team's vice-captain over his non-selection for the squad for the inaugural Twenty20 world championships next month.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Cricket South Africa's (CSA) chief executive Gerald Majola said: 'Jacques Kallis phoned me yesterday (Monday) to say he was resigning as vice-captain of the Proteas because of his disappointment over not being selected for the South African squad for the Twenty20 tournament.

'I said we all understood his disappointment, and appealed to him not to resign while in an emotional state but to rather meet with CSA to discuss the matter fully so that we could deal with all the issues at hand.'

While regretting the middle order batsman's 'unilateral decision to publicly announce his resignation as vice-captain', Majola said he would meet Kallis to try and persuade him to continue.

'I will again meet with Jacques to discuss the matter fully with him and will ask him to reconsider his decision to resign as vice-captain.'

The CSA official was also critical of the way Kallis went pubic with his resignation.

'This is regrettable, particularly in the light that CSA and the players' trade union, the South African Cricketers Association (SACA), have recently signed a ground-breaking memorandum of understanding which outlines the way in which we will deal with each other for mutual benefit,' he added.

'Jacques is employed by CSA, and we expected him at least to sit down at a meeting and go through the matter before he made his own decision to make a public announcement.

'CSA hopes that Jacques will reconsider his decision because we believe that he has much to offer as vice-captain and has been a stalwart on the field for South African cricket for more than a decade.'

South Africa omit Kallis, Boucher

Durban: Jacques Kallis suffered his second disappointment in less than a week on Thursday when he was left out of South Africa's squad to tour Zimbabwe.

All-rounder Kallis was on Saturday omitted from the squad for the Twenty20 world championship, which will be staged in South Africa in September.

The squad which will play three One-Day Internationals in Zimbabwe next week differs slightly from that selected for the 20-over tournament.

Fast bowler Dale Steyn has been picked in place of all-rounder Justin Kemp, whose wedding is imminent, and wicketkeeper Mark Boucher has been omitted.

AB de Villiers will take over behind the stumps in Zimbabwe.

A Cricket South Africa statement quoted selection convenor Joubert Strydom as saying the squads were similar because South Africa wanted to use their matches against Zimbabwe to prepare for the Twenty20 tournament.

Strydom said Kallis's omission from the Twenty20 squad was due to his being rested.

However, Kallis showed his disappointment by resigning as South Africa's vice-captain and saying he was considering his options for the future.

Boucher supported Kallis in media reports and comments attributed to the wicketkeeper have led to his being summoned to a disciplinary hearing on Friday.

Coach Mickey Arthur said Boucher's omission was not related to this week's rumpus.

"Mark and I had a long discussion about a month ago and we both agreed that with the strenuous season ahead we need to ease his workload on the one hand and on the other hand to give AB more game time with the gloves," the statement quoted Arthur as saying.

The first One-Day International will be played in Bulawayo on Aug. 22, with the second and third games scheduled for Harare on Aug. 25 and 26.

Squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Gulam Bodi, Loots Bosman, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Vernon Philander, Shaun Pollock, Dale Steyn, Thandi Tshabalala, Johan van der Wath.
