Subhash Chandra, who heads the Essel Group, owners of the Zee brand, has announced a breakaway cricket series called the Indian Cricket League (ICL). The Essel Group will invest Rs 100 crore (US$ 23 million approx) in the project, which will run parallel to the leagues and tournaments of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The Indian board said it will take an appropriate decision on the letter from Zee Television, seeking permission to start a parallel league. "The President, BCCI, Sharad Pawar has received a letter from Mr Subhash Chandra, Zee Television, seeking permission to start the Indian Cricket League. An appropriate decision in this matter will be taken by the Board," BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah said in a media release. Meanwhile, BCCI vice-president Shashank Manohar said from Nagpur that it was premature to react to the formation of a parallel body for the game.
The ICL will have six teams with two Indian internationals, four overseas players and eight juniors in each side, though Chandra didn't name those players, if any, who'd already signed up. At the end of the third year, there will be 16 teams in the ICL. Chandra, while announcing this initiative in Delhi, said this initiative was not in conflict with the BCCI but would be complementary to them.
Stating that the Indian board's selection process has failed to create "a reserve pipeline of players", Chandra added that the idea behind the league is to create an "ideal pool with killing instinct". The BCCI, he said, would be free to draw from the talent pool.
"We feel that despite cricket being a passion, a religion in this country and despite it having great commercial players, BCCI has only six A-grade players signed up," he said. "Therefore, there is need for some united effort to create a talent pool. And this will be done by a three pronged strategy -discovery, diligence and display."
To achieve its objectives, Zee plans to set up cricket academies equipped with state-of-the-art facilities across the country. Sports medicine would be introduced to ensure players' fitness and a full-fledged record maintained of their behaviour pattern, diet-plan and game statistics. The group will also appoint talent scouts in all 35 states to hunt for young players to play in the ICL.
The finer points of ICL:
- 6 teams or clubs to play in the opening year
- Talks on with BCCI for gaining access to stadiums
- Executive Board of the league under installation
- Pool of referees and umpires to be created
- Rules committee to form regulations for ICL
- Ombudsman to look into grievances of players
- League to begin with Twenty20 format and move to ODI format
- League to be a joint venture between Essel Group and ILFS Group
- Each team to have a mentor, media manager, psychologist, physio
- Prize money for the winner- US$ 1 million
- League teams to compete with teams internationally
- Number of teams to be increased from 6 to 16 in three years

Zee Denies Signing Big Stars Like Brian Lara, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Inzamam-
Zee Denies Signing Big Stars Like Brian Lara, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Inzamam-ul-Haq For Its Indian Cricket League
Submitted by Rohit Bhandiye on Sun, 2007-05-13 13:55.
The Zee Television has categorically dismissed as "false" a report which claimed that legendary Brian Lara, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Inzamam-ul-Haq, had been signed for its Indian Cricket League.
Zee Sports business head Himanshu Modi said that no such deal had been materialised so far.
"Nothing like this happened. This is all false news," he said from Singapore.
Asked if Zee could sign mega cricket stars in future, Modi said "we cannot say anything at this moment, but I can assure you that we have not signed anyone as yet."
A report in 'Spin' magazine said some of the biggest names in world cricket like Brian Lara, Shane Warne, and Glenn McGrath, who all have recently retired from international cricket, and Inzamam-ul Haq, who has quit ODIs, have been signed up for the breakaway league in Indian cricket.
Zee TV chairman Subhash Chandra recently announced the separate cricket league offering a winner's purse of USD 1 million.
The league will be launched with a Twenty20 championship shortly after the World Cup of the newest version in South Africa in September.
A Twenty20 team will feature two overseas stars as well as four current or recent Indian internationals.

The other is allrounder Shahid Afridi, though he admitted he was guarded on taking up the lucrative offer, keeping in mind the long-term implications.
"Yes I have been approached to sign for ICL," Afridi told the Khaleej Times. "But it is too early to say whether I will accept it or not. No doubt the offer, although not yet in writing, is very attractive. However, there are lots of issues to consider before taking a final decision on the offer."

Re: Shahid Afridi may go for ICL
Nasim Ashraf, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, has expressed satisfaction that several Pakistan cricketers have turned down lucrative offers to join the Indian Cricket League (ICL). Eight Pakistan cricketers signed six-month contracts offered by the PCB, which would prevent them from joining any professional league.
"We had faith in our players that they will not join the Indian league," Ashraf told reporters in Karachi. The PCB had already made it clear that any contracted player turning out for the ICL will not be considered for Pakistan. Seven current players were reported to have been approached by the league and Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif and Shahid Afridi have already turned down offers.
Younis Khan, the middle-order batsman, too was among those who were approached and Ashraf confirmed that he had also rejected the offer. "Younis was made the offer in England where he is playing county cricket but he told the official who contacted him that he is happy playing for his employers Habib Bank and for Pakistan."
Ashraf highlighted other factors which may have influenced the decision of the players, mainly the fact that the league is yet to be recognised by the ICC and the Indian board. Secondly, the league has attracted former players like Brian Lara and Shane Warne but no high profile current players. With the contracts being issued, Ashraf said he was confident that none of his players would compromise on representing their country.
"I was least bothered because I know my players and was sure that they would not join any league which is neither accepted by the Indian board nor by the ICC," he said. "I am pleased to know the players' sentiments and they proved they only want to play for Pakistan. The league is only signed by players who have either retired or are on the verge of retirement so we were not bothered."
Pakistan face a busy schedule in the months ahead with a home series against South Africa in October, followed by a tour of India, the dates of which would have invariably clashed with those of the ICL.

Inzamam-ul-Haq has indicated that he might sign up for the Indian Cricket League (ICL), saying the ultimatum issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board does not apply to him as he isn't under contract with the board.
Inzamam, who was not among those given a central contract by the PCB last month, said he had been offered US$50,000 a month by the ICL. He was writing in his diary on bigstarcricket.com.
"If they [PCB] are not selecting me I have a right to play cricket anywhere, whether in county cricket, Bangladesh, or India," Inzamam said on the website. "But I'm not interested in only money, I'm interested in playing cricket.
"The ICL is offering me good money and cricket. I have not played any cricket since the World Cup. Although I am still desperate to play for Pakistan it is not good for me if I get picked for Test cricket with no match practice behind me. There is no cricket in Pakistan before the South Africa series so I need to play."
Inzamam said he would want to play for Pakistan even if he signs for the ICL. "I would like to play in India and then as soon as my country needs me I would come back for national duty."

ICL's official website launched
New Delhi: The rebel Indian Cricket League has done something which the BCCI, the world's richest cricket Board, has not done in 77 years - launch its official website.
ICL, the much talked about venture of Subash Chandra's Essel Group which has already sounded the alarm bells in the BCCI, on Friday announced the launch of their website www.indiancricketleague.in to facilitate the entry of aspiring players.
The website would help hundreds of aspirants to now apply directly for the twenty20 League proposed to be held in October.
"We have been getting thousands of mails, letters and queries from aspiring cricketers who don't know how to apply for the ICL. With the website, a single point of information and application of interest will exist for all," Business Head of ICL, Himanshu Mody, said in a press release.
The ICL has already signed up several former Indian and international greats such as Brian Lara, Kiran More, Tony Greig, Dean Jones and Kapil Dev, who heads their Executive Board.
The ICL will involve young talented players being identified from all over India, being trained to compete at the highest levels and then playing for their respective regions alongside top international stars.
The ICL will also make a foray in creating nation wide infrastructure (cricket academies) which will be equipped with state of the art facilities headed by international and domestic coaches under the supervision of a national director of academies, B S Sandhu.

| Yousuf, Razzaq and Farhat sign contracts | | | | with Indian Cricket League?
From our correspondent
LAHORE: There are reports that three Pakistan cricketers Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq and Imran Farhat have signed the contracts offered to them by the newly-established Indian Cricket League (ICL).
According to sources, these cricketers signed the contracts on Tuesday. When contacted the cell numbers of all these cricketers were not responding. However, a credible source informed this scribe on Tuesday that the contracts were signed on Tuesday.
The source added that the amount of the contract was tempting and it wasn’t possible for the cricketers to have a second thought. Yousuf, Razzaq and Imran were upset over their non-inclusion in the Pakistan cricke team for the Twenty20 World Cup to be played in South Africa next month.
Yousuf had accepted the decision terming it the will of Allah whereas Razzaq criticised the selectors. Yousuf and Razzaq had yet to sign PCB’s central contract. Imran’s case is different. He had already signed the central contract.

Pakistani All-Rounder Abdul Razzaq Undecided Over Signing Central Contract With The P
All-rounder Abdul Razzaq is not likely to sign the central contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) till the deadline ending on Wednesday and he is also going to England to play county cricket for Worcestershire.
In a brief chat with reporters, Razzaq said, he had not made up his mind so far to sign the central contract. However, he added that he was going to England on Wednesday to strike a deal with Worcestershire.
On the other hand, Razzaq denied rumours that he was going to play in the Indian Cricket League (ICL).
Like Razzaq, Mohammad Yousuf, who was also overlooked for the Twenty20 World Championship, has also not signed the central contract with the PCB so far. The last date of signing the contract is Aug 15.
The PCB has already announced that any player, who joins the ICL, will face a ban. However, former Test cricketers Javed Miandad and Intikhab Alam have supported the players who wanted to play in the ICL, saying it is their right.
What is going on here?

Farhat released from central contract

Imran Farhat has been released from his central contract that he signed earlier this month by the Pakistan Cricket Board upon his request. According to sources close to him, Farhat was lured away from national commitments by a lucrative Indian Cricket League (ICL) offer prompting him to request a release.
"We have received an application from Imran Farhat in which he has asked us to terminate his central contract," Ahsan Malik, PCB's director of communications, told the News. "It is a player's right to make such a request and we have decided to release him."
Farhat has featured in 27 Tests and 33 ODIs and last played a Test against South Africa in January earlier this year. He was then omitted from the team for the World Cup, Abu Dhabi and Scotland tours while being fined by the board for a show of dissent.
The PCB has already announced life-time bans from national selection for players signing up with ICL. There are also reports that Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq, who have yet to sign their contracts, are close to signing up with the league.
Shafqat Naghmi, PCB's chief operating officer, told Cricinfo that: "Though they [Yousuf and Razzaq] have not been in touch with the board, I want to hear responses from them. The board is willing to wait for their answers as they are both too important as players to be sacrificed for deadlines."
Younis Khan, however, has already informed the board that he needs more time to sign the contract.
"Younis is yet to receive the contract which is why we have extended the deadline for its signing by a few days," Malik said. "We have given the players a few more days to review the contracts before taking a decision on it."
Malik also revealed that Danish Kaneria had recently signed the contract.
